What is Faith?

  • Posted on October 30, 2011 at 1:38 am

Hebrews 11:6 … But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

What is faith? It is confident assurance that something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we cannot see it up ahead. Men of God in the days of old were famous for their faith.

Do you remember how you felt when your wre younger and your birthday approached? You were excited and anxious. You knew you would certainly receive gifts and other special treats. But some things would be a surprise. Birthdays combined assurance and anticipation, and so does faith in Jesus Christ!!! Faith is the Conviction based on past experiences that God’s new and fresh surprises will surely be ours.

Two words describe our faith: confidence and certainty. These two qualities need a secure beginning and ending point. The beginning point of faith is believing in God’s character – He IS who He says He is!! The end point is believing in God’s promises – He WILL do what He says. We believe that God will fulfill His promises even though we don’t see those promises materializing NOW – this is true faith (John 20:24-31).

John 20:24-31 KJV But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.

Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God.
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

We have to know that when we read these verses in John chapter 20 concerning faith, we wish we could actually see Jesus, touch him, and hear his words. Are there times you want to sit down with him and get his advice? Thomas wanted Jesus’ physical presence. But God’s plan is wiser. He has not kept himself contained in one physical body, he wants to be present with all of us at all times. Even now He is with us in the form of the Holy Spirit. You can talk to him, and you can find his words to you in the pages of the Bible. He can be as real to you as he was to Thomas :)

Jesus wasn’t hard on Thomas for his doubts. Despite his skepticism, Thomas was still loyal to the believers and to Jesus himself. Some need doubt before they believe. Jesus’ resurrected body was a unique kind of physical body. It was not the same kind of flesh and blood Lazarus had when he came back to life. Jesus’ body was no longer subject to the same laws of nature as before his death – he could appear in a locked room. Yet he was not a ghost or apparition; he could be touched and could eat. Jesus’ resurrection was literal and physical – he was not a disembodied spirit. Some people think they would believe in Jesus if they could see a definite sign or miracle.

But Jesus says we are blessed if we can believe without seeing. We have all the proof we need in the words of the Bible and the testimony of believers :)

May the Peace of God Rule in Your Heart

May the Peace of God Rule in Your Heart – David Wilkerson

The Spirit has been making it so clear to me that all my praying is totally in vain unless I pray in faith. I could weep, fast, intercede, agonize and travail in prayer, yet make no impact with the Lord at all – unless I was doing it all with simple, childlike faith.

God will not act on our behalf without faith. The Word says, “Let not that man [the doubter] think he shall receive anything from God” (James 1:7).

The Lord commands us to trust him. Yet often we have so little confidence in him, so little faith in his willingness and desire to answer our heart-cry. When we get to heaven, we will be amazed to discover all the blessings, peace and power we had at our disposal but did not appropriate because of our weak faith.

I AM GREATLY MOVED UPON BY THE HOLY SPIRIT TO CHALLENGE YOU TO INCREASE YOUR FAITH. Ask the Lord to forgive your unbelief and to flood your soul with confidence in his willingness to over-answer your sincere prayers.

Do you want an increase faith? When you go to prayer again, use the following Scriptures to reason with the Lord. He will not deny his own Word. Lay hold upon these:

• Psalm 62:8
• Psalm 91:4
• Psalm 56:3
• Proverbs 30:5
• Jeremiah 29:10-14

Hold on by faith! He will answer you, and soon.

The Cup of Death, The Gift of Life – David Singer

  • Posted on April 23, 2011 at 1:42 am

“The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is the nexus of our faith–the key to restored relationship with God.  The story of God coming to earth as one of us to die, at first glance, seems outrageously far-fetched.  Yet all of Scripture either seems to point toward Christ’s crucifixion or deals with the new reality of renewed relationship brought about through this historical event.  Although it is Christ’s resurrection that concludes the “life and death” drama of Holy Week, in a sense, the resurrection serves as God’s unambiguous confirmation that his forgiveness was accomplished — the spell of sin broken — and that Christ’s victory over death has, indeed, been won.”  …

… “God, through his Son, suffered death so that we might live.  In the book of Hebrews (2.14b, 15) it says, ‘Jesus himself became like (us) and shared (our) human nature.  He did this so that through his death he might destroy the Devil, who has the power over death, and in this way set free those who were slaves all their lives because of their fear of death.’  It is the gift of Good Friday and the confirmation of Easter.  God, through Christ, suffered the pain — the spiritual pain of separation — for our sins.  Such is God’s love gift offered to us this and every Easter.”
