The Arrow

THE ARROW–AN END TIME DREAM (on Dec. 26, 2011)
Early morning, Monday, December 26, 2011:
by Sharon Moles

I haven’t had an endtime-type dream in years. Last night, I had one. In it, I was telling people about the extreme shortness of the hour, and shared scripture after scripture. The people didn’t listen to me. It was like my voice flew right over their heads and away–with no results. Some of the people even laughed at me. I recall that I told them about the coming wars in the Middle East–AND the sequence in which I expect them to unfold (Psalm 83 and the burden of Damascus). I’d just started telling about the Gog/Magog Invasion…AND THEN my vision ZOOMED BACK until I could see the United States laid out like a map in front of me. Something flew in from the northeast. I thought it looked like a rocket/missile. It resembled a huge arrow, and it hit the United States right in the middle…it had to be near the Missouri/Kansas area (as far as I could discern). And it created a disaster (it also could have been in the New Madrid area). I felt myself starting to wake-up, and I TRIED NOT TO wake up. Even as I was coming awake, I kept teaching Bible Prophecy, and kept trying to warn the people of upcoming disasters (as prophesied in Revelation). I wanted so desperately to keep speaking and teaching…but my eyes opened and that effectively ended my dream. After I awakened, I WONDERED if the arrow I saw was NOT really a missile with a bomb, but instead a meteor (but it didn’t glow like a meteor…it just looked like an arrow shaft which plowed into the earth). Maybe it wasn’t a missile either, but only a WARNING of SOMETHING occurring right in the middle of the United States. (I’m still thinking about this dream, and seeking the Lord for any possible meaning to it.)

Added Thursday morning, December 29, 2011:

I’ve been pondering this dream since the 26th. There are THREE (possible) meanings for that ARROW…

(1.) At the time of one of the prophesied end time wars, the enemies of Israel could also strike at the United States. Such a possible attack is mentioned in the Gog/Magog Invasion. Ezekiel 39:6–where God declares, “And I will send a fire on Magog (Russia), and among them that DWELL CARELESSLY IN THE ISLES: and they shall know that I am the Lord.” Those who dwell carelessly in the isles REFERS to a people who dwell across WATER from Israel. Some commentators (myself included) feel this is a reference to the United States. The FIRE (represented by the ARROW in my dream–A MISSILE???) can picture an attack upon the U.S. at the same time as the Invasion is directed toward Israel.

(2.) The ARROW in my dream, which POINTED to the heartland of America, could also represent an expected catastrophe in this region (of natural causes–like an earthquake). We are all aware of the New Madrid fault zone, which could rupture in one of the BIRTH PANGS of earthquakes, which Jesus said will occur in the time near His Second Coming.

(3.) The ARROW in my dream, POINTED AT the very HEART of America, COULD REPRESENT God’s judgment and abandonment of a nation which has ABANDONED HIM. Over the past decades, a falling away–which really BEGAN in EARNEST in the rebellion against authority in the 1960′s–has come to its FULL.

Need I mention all the sins against God which runs like a sewer throughout this once “godly” and “Christian-based” nation? Instead of missionaries sent to other countries with God’s Word and the Gospel of Jesus, the United States now exports degradation…in its ungodly movies and hedonistic lifestyle.

Need I mention abortion, homosexuality, and the characteristics of the last generation BEFORE Christ comes, as recorded in 2 Timothy 3:1-5?

I WILL INDEED LIST THEM–these people are lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection (no natural love towards children or family), false accusers, incontinent (without self-control), fierce, despisers of those that are good (the ridiculing and hatred of true followers of Jesus), traitors, heady (lifted up, arrogant, thinking better of themselves than they are), highminded (thinking themselves smarter than others), lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God; having A FORM of godliness (religion) but DENYING the POWER thereof.

God has a word for a people like this: it’s recorded in various places throughout the Bible, but I will quote Isaiah 1:4-7. (This rebuke from God was spoken to Israel, which was greatly backslidden and wicked–who had ABANDONED the God Who called them.) However, this word can ALSO APPLY to a-once-strong Christian nation who has SO SEVERELY FALLEN AWAY from God’s precepts and values. This word can apply to the United States as we see it today.

“Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: THEY HAVE FORSAKEN THE LORD, THEY HAVE PROVOKED THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL TO ANGER, THEY ARE GONE AWAY BACKWARDS (backslidden).

“Why should you be stricken any more? YOU WILL REVOLT MORE AND MORE (this means that if God strikes with warning chastisements, it will be fruitless–this nation will only revolt more and more; AND THAT APPEARS TO BE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW): the whole head is sick (even the HEAD of the LAND, the GOVERNMENT is SICK), and the WHOLE HEART FAINT (that’s WHY the arrow STRUCK at the nation’s heart).

“From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it (in this nation, from the smallest people right up to the top, has no soundness–no consideration of God); but WOUNDS (how this country suffers!), and bruises, and PUTRIFYING SORES: they have NOT been closed, NEITHER bound up, NEITHER mollified with ointment (because the nation as a whole has TURNED AWAY FROM GOD, THE ONE WHO CAN BIND THEM UP).

“Your country is DESOLATE, your cities are BURNED WITH FIRE (coming judgments): YOUR LAND, STRANGERS DEVOUR IT IN YOUR PRESENCE (even as citizens dwell here, strangers FOREIGNERS are taking over the land–China already owns much of the country–and Islam is taking over the LAW of the land), and it (the country) is desolate, and OVERTHROWN by strangers.”

The ARROW in the dream can refer to a FINAL OVERTHROW, when this AMERICAN CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC falls under the RULE OF THE ANTICHRIST (his one world government), and it could ALSO refer to a fiery destruction when the enemies of Israel strike at the heart of this land in the upcoming end time wars.

I knew when I awakened from this dream that the message was serious, a warning from God–it’s a warning of what is SO SOON to hit this country. The message is HARD-HITTING, but as NECESSARY to us in this hour as it was to Israel BEFORE their captivity to Babylon.

Israel went to Babylon, because the nation, as a WHOLE, did NOT repent of their evil. (However, there were SOME Godly ones in their midst–like Daniel.)

The United States, as a nation, FACES being turned over to Babylon (the wicked end time POWER–both religious and governmental) which will OPPRESS the world under the reign of the Antichrist. Will our country REPENT?

I DON’T believe it will… We are already TOO FAR into the God-ordained FULFILLMENTS OF END TIME PROPHECY! The great bulk of the population of the United States will be hauled into captivity to the Babylonian One-World SYSTEM (which is prophesied).

However, there are those in the United States, who LIKE DANIEL, have NOT turned away from God. We are the TRUE WORSHIPERS of God, the TRUE CHURCH of Jesus Christ–few in number now, but still here, still present, in the midst of a perverse and wicked generation.

Now, recall how God had His hand on Daniel in a POWERFUL and MIGHTY way. Daniel had the gift of interpreting dreams, for one thing. Even in the midst of a pagan land, Daniel honored the God of Israel. God rewarded him!

In Daniel chapter 3, there came a time when THREE FRIENDS of Daniel were part of the crowd–which was being FORCED by Nebuchadnezzar–to fall down and worship the image (which contained the numbers–666). Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah (their Hebrew names) were warned by the wicked king that IF they did NOT BOW to the image, that they would be thrown into a FURNACE that was heated SEVEN TIMES HOTTER than usual. They did NOT bow. And sure enough, they were cast into THAT FIRE (which was SO HOT that it killed the ones who threw them into the flames). Lo and behold, the fire did NOT consume them. And even better, there was ONE in the MIDST of the fire WITH THEM Who looked like the Son of God!

These THREE did NOT bow! They were SAVED, even in THE MIDST of the FIERY FURNACE!

But, WHERE was Daniel?

Since Nebuchadnezzar had elevated Daniel to the THIRD highest position in the Babylonian government, and since he was NOT PRESENT at the FIERY FURNACE, we can easily ASSUME that Daniel was OUT OF THE AREA–probably on some duty to the state.

Certainly, if Daniel HAD BEEN PRESENT at the scene of the FIERY FURNACE, he would NOT have bowed, and he would have been cast into THAT FURNACE, too. BUT HE WASN’T. WHY???

What is the picture here? What is this SAYING to a Church, who LIKE DANIEL, honors God in the midst of a crooked and perverse country?

The THREE friends of Daniel IN THE MIDST OF THE FURNACE are a picture of ISRAEL, who WILL FACE the wicked atrocities of the Antichrist (Nebuchadnezzar is a picture of the Antichrist). The IMAGE (which the king demanded be bowed to) is a picture of the IMAGE OF THE BEAST with the number 666 as recorded in Revelation 13. The FIERY FURNACE is a picture of the coming Tribulation, and it is SEVEN TIMES HOTTER than usual! The Tribulation (as prophesied by Daniel in 9:27), is SEVEN YEARS long. ONE WEEK of years is the Hebrew “shabua”–a period of SEVEN YEARS. A SEVEN YEAR SABBATICAL SPAN!!! Israel will face the Antichrist in the SEVEN YEAR TRIBULATION, but they will NOT be alone in it–with them is the ONE Who has the appearance of the Son of God. At the end of the Tribulation, Israel will recognize Jesus as their King and Messiah, the one Whom they had pierced. Zechariah 12:10-14.

The THREE friends of Daniel IN THE MIDST OF THE FURNACE is a DIRECT PICTURE of Zechariah 13:8-9. “And it shall come to pass, that in all the land (Israel), saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but THE THIRD (like three friends) shall be left therein (and survive the Tribulation). And I will BRING THE THIRD PART THROUGH THE FIRE, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: They shall CALL ON MY NAME, and I WILL HEAR THEM: I will SAY, ‘IT IS MY PEOPLE’: and they shall SAY, ‘THE LORD IS MY GOD.’”

But what about Danie? What is he a picture of?

He is a picture of a people WHO ARE NOT AT THE SCENE of the FIERY FURNACE, and a picture of a people WHO ARE NOT CAST INTO THAT FIRE!

Now, WHO can that be?

Now, let’s turn our attention ALL THE WAY BACK to the people I described earlier, CITIZENS of the United States who HAVE NOT ABANDONED their faith in God. These are the TRUE CHRISTIANS (like Daniel) who are in THE MIDDLE of a country, which as a whole, has DESERTED GOD. When the TIME for God’s SEVERE ARROW of judgment is to fall upon the land, these people, having been Raptured, will NOT be in the midst of that judgment! Just like GOD-FEARING Daniel was NOT cast into the FIERY FURNACE.

So, yes–there is a terrible judgment coming. These United States will have THE ARROW of God’s judgment directed RIGHT AT ITS HEART, and the country (as it is now) will no longer exist. It will either completely fall, OR it will be part of the One-World Antichrist government. It’s populace will SUFFER there greatly.

The good news for the TRUE CHURCH is that we will NOT see the terrible events of the Tribulation. Like Daniel, we will be AWAY FROM THE AREA–and NOT FACE the fiery furnace at all!

However, the warning of THE ARROW remains! While there is yet some BORROWED time: REPENT. REPENT. REPENT.

Turn to God now through the GIFT (Grace) He has given in Jesus Christ! Turn away from the ungodly sins and debauchery of a wicked nation! Repent of YOUR SINS which keep you separated from a HOLY GOD. Remember this, “He that BELIEVES NOT in the Lord Jesus Christ is CONDEMNED ALREADY”–having been BORN with a SIN NATURE that keeps you from the presence of God (See John 3:18).

In His LOVE for you, God has done ALL HE CAN to provide A WAY through which you may COME TO HIM. “For God so LOVED the world, that HE GAVE (which is His Grace) His only begotten Son (Jesus Christ), that WHOSOEVER (may you be one of the “whosoevers” that) BELIEVE in Him (so that you) SHOULD NOT PERISH, but have EVERLASTING LIFE.” John 3:16.

And remember, too, “Neither is there salvation in ANY OTHER (nothing else can save you): for there is NONE OTHER NAME UNDER HEAVEN given among men, whereby you MUST be saved.” Acts 4:12. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life: NO MAN comes to the Father, BUT BY ME.”

Jesus shed His precious blood (which was WITHOUT ANY SIN), and in that act, HE PAID THE PENALTY which God had placed upon OUR sin. THAT PENALTY WAS ETERNAL DEATH AND SEPARATION FROM GOD FOREVER. ALL who SIN will die–and GO to a prison that was created for the devil and his fallen angels (called hell). JESUS DIED IN OUR PLACE. His pure holy blood PAID THE PRICE that God had exacted UPON SIN. When Jesus died, He said “IT IS FINISHED.” In the Greek, the word means “PAID IN FULL.” When we BELIEVE (have confidence and trust) that the BLOOD OF JESUS saves us, we are MADE RIGHT WITH GOD.

“For He (God) has MADE HIM (Jesus) TO BE SIN FOR US, (Jesus) Who knew no sin; that we might BE MADE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21. JESUS DIED IN OUR STEAD, AND WHEN WE BELIEVE IN JESUS’ WORK AT THE CROSS FOR US, WE BECOME RIGHTEOUS IN THE EYES OF GOD! We are SET FREE from the bondage of our sin.

“But God commended His LOVE toward us, in that, while we were YET SINNERS, Christ died FOR US.” Romans 5:17.

The time is SO SHORT now. That ARROW which I saw in my dream could FALL at ANY TIME. We are IN THE FINAL STAGES, just PRIOR to when Jesus will Rapture His Church.

Therefore, DO NOT DELAY in making that VITAL DECISION for Christ.

Repent of sins. Be convinced that your sin will send you to hell IF you DO NOT place your CONFIDENCE in what Jesus did FOR YOU when He died on the cross. Tell Jesus that you ACCEPT the GIFT God has given you IN JESUS. Say to Jesus that you WANT TO HAVE YOUR SINS FORGIVEN AND CLEANSED through the blood that He SHED FOR YOU. Tell Jesus that you want Him to COME LIVE INSIDE YOU by the Holy Spirit. “Come into my heart, dear Jesus. Give me the NEW and ETERNAL LIFE that is mine IN YOU. I want to be BORN AGAIN.”

Jesus will come into your heart–the very minute you turn to Him and ask. “For whosoever shall CALL UPON THE NAME of the Lord SHALL BE SAVED.” Romans 10:13.

Come to Jesus NOW–BEFORE that ARROW falls and judgments arrive. All who are BORN AGAIN will be taken to heaven–when Jesus descends into the air as He Raptures the Church. Be PART of that number who (like Daniel) will NOT BE PRESENT on earth when the Antichrist has his scene.

“For God has NOT APPOINTED US to wrath, but to obtain SALVATION (deliverance) by our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 5:9.

Recipe for a Happy New Year – Author Unknown

Take 12 whole months,
Clean them thoroughly of all bitterness, hate and jealousy,
Make them just as fresh and clean as possible.

Now cut each month into 28, 30 or 31 different parts,
But don’t make up the whole batch at once.
Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients.

Mix well into each day one part of faith,
One part of patience, one part of courage,
And one part of work.

Add to each day one part of hope,
Faithfulness, generosity and kindness.
Blend with one part prayer,

One part meditation, and one good deed.
Season the whole with a dash of good spirits,
A sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play,
And a cupful of good humor.

Pour all of this into a vessel of love.
Cook thoroughly over radiant joy,
Garnish with a smile,
And serve with quietness, unselfishness,
And cheerfulness.

You’re bound to have a happy new year.

Being happy doesn’t mean that
Everything is perfect.
It means that you have decided
To look beyond the imperfections.

Happy New Year 2012!

  • Posted on January 1, 2012 at 11:32 am

I received an email with the message below and thought I’d share it.  I feel like I can relate to this in some ways for I’m at the midway point of my years at the young age of 51.

And Then it’s Winter!

You know, time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. And yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. And I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is, the winter of my life–and it catches me by surprise.

How did I get here so fast?

Where did the years go and where did my babies go?

And where did my youth go?

I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is, my friends are retired and really getting gray, they move slower and I see an older person now. Lots are in better shape than me, but, I see the great change. Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant, but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we’d be. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore, it’s mandatory–cause if I don’t on my own free will, I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so, now I enter into this new season of my life, totally unprepared for all the aches and pains, and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I’m not sure how long it will last, this I know, that when it’s over, its over.

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn’t done, things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I’m happy to have done. It’s all in a lifetime….

So, if you’re not in your winter yet, let me remind you that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don’t put things off too long! Life goes by quickly. So do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life, so live for good today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!!

“Life is a gift to you from God. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.

” LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY! DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY! BE THANKFUL! And Praise God For all He’s given you!

The History of Christmas

The History of Christmas: Its Biblical Roots
from the December 20, 2011 KHouse eNews issue

Last week we looked at the pagan holidays that were celebrated at the end of December. Because of these pagan roots, many Christians believe we should avoid Christmas as ultimately a pagan holiday. Yet, does the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ itself have anything to do with pagans? Or is it truly a Christian holiday that is simply celebrated at the wrong time of year?

The Hebrew Roots:

Jesus birth was foretold centuries prior in the Hebrew Scriptures. In the fullness of time, God sent His Son to redeem mankind. He sent Jesus as a little baby to become God With Us.

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting . -Micah 5:2

And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth . -Isaiah 49:6

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel . -Isaiah 7:14

…When at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this . -Isaiah 9:1-2,6-7

The Christian Roots:

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. – Luke 1:30-35

About 1950 years ago, the well-educated and faithful physician Luke wrote to one Theophilus, detailing the life of Jesus Christ. Luke explained that he had done research on the subject so that Theophilus could know with certainty that the things he had been told about Jesus were true (Luke 1:4). Luke must have spoken with Mary herself, for he tells of things that only she would know.

‘But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart,’ – Luke 2:19.

Luke tells Theophilus of the birth of Jesus; how he was born in Bethlehem during a time when the entire Roman world was being taxed. Shepherds out in the field were surprised by a host of angels that filled the sky, singing, ‘Glory to God in the highest!’ and as they were told, went down to find the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. Those shepherds then told everybody they could find about the incredible things they had seen.

The child grew up and went on to have a short, three-year ministry that ended in his death on a Roman Cross. Yet, the man that was born in Bethlehem rose again from the dead, as witnessed by over 500 men (1 Cor 15:6). And he is still changing the hearts and lives of people living today.

The early Christians are not known to have celebrated Christ’s birth, and the actual date of his nativity has been lost in history. The first recorded mention of the December 25 date is in the Calendar of Philocalus (AD 354), which assumed Jesus’ birth date to be Friday, December 25, in AD 1. Pope Julius I officially proclaimed December 25 to be the anniversary of Christ’s birth in AD 440. Giving December 25th Christian significance has been understood to have been an effort to help the pagan world embrace Christianity and trade in their worship of pagan gods for the One True God. Originally called the Feast of the Nativity, the custom spread to Egypt by AD 432 and to England by the end of the 6th century. By the end of the 8th century, the celebration of Christmas had spread all the way to the Scandinavian countries.

Christmas is celebrated on January 6 in the Orthodox Church, on what is also called Epiphany or Three Kings Day, the day that celebrates the arrival of the wise men who gave the Christ child their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Today

Christmas did largely win out over the pagan holidays, but was still celebrated with rowdy festivities and practical jokes – more like Mardi Gras than anything resembling the character of Christ. Puritans in England outlawed Christmas for years, and the holiday was not popular in early America. In fact, Christmas wasn’t declared a federal holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870.

The holiday then underwent a conversion. Christmas was ‘reinvented’ into the more moderate holiday we know today. Washington Irving and Charles Dickens both wrote tales that presented Christmas as a holiday of caring for the poor and bringing families together. As the angels sang above the shepherds that first night, Christmas was about ‘peace on earth, good will toward men.’

Conclusion:

The Season is still a mixture of traditions pulled from a multitude of sources. While many of them have little to do with Jesus, most are morally neutral activities. However, even while Santa Claus ho ho ho’s down Main St. on a fire truck, and Hershey makes a killing on aluminum-wrapped chocolate bells, the reality of Christ’s birth does break through. Nativity scenes in downtown squares and in front of churches bring to mind the great gift of God – the King of kings lying in a manger, attended by shepherds. Christmas carols that cry ‘The Lord is come’ and ‘Come let us adore him’ are sung from door to door, reminding us all of what God has done.

It is a time of year when people can speak more freely of Jesus the Savior, and when even the faithless are willing to go to a Christmas Eve church service. It is truly a precious slot of time God has given us during which to spread the Good News of His Son. Glory to God in the highest!

May your celebration of the birth of Christ honor Him who gave Himself to us as the ultimate sacrifice of love. May everything we do reflect the love and compassion of our Savior, and bring glory to His name.

Christmas: Is it Pagan?

  • Posted on December 18, 2011 at 1:58 pm

The History of Christmas: Is It Pagan?
from the December 13, 2011 KHouse  eNews issue

Christ.mas n.
-A Christian feast commemorating the birth of Jesus.
-An annual church festival (December 25) and in some States a legal holiday, in memory of the birth of Christ, often celebrated by a particular church service, and also by special gifts, greetings, and hospitality. [www.Dictionary.com]

The celebration of Christmas has caused some controversy in recent years, for a variety of reasons. Many have been concerned that Christ is too often left out of Christmas; replaced by trimmings and presents and fudge. Others have battled over whether we should allow manger scenes on public property or allow the school choir to sing Christmas carols that actually contain a message about Jesus Christ. On the other hand, a growing number of Christians have been arguing that we should not celebrate Christmas at all because there is no command to do so in the Bible and because the celebration has pagan roots.

What stand should we take? How should we approach Christmas in the light of history and in the light of the Bible? This week we’ll look at the history of the winter solstice and other pagan celebrations, and continue next week with the Jewish and Christian roots of this favorite of holidays.

The Pagan History:
Many pagan religions throughout the millennia have worshipped the sun as the source of light and warmth and life. As darkness deepened in the winter and the shortest day of the year approached, many pagans of yesteryear feared that the light might die altogether. Once the winter solstice hit, however, and the hours of sunlight began to increase once again, there would be great celebrations over the return of the sun and the accompanying hope for a future spring. In the northern hemisphere, these celebrations would occur toward the end of December.

Tammuz, the son of Nimrod and his queen, Semiramis, was identified with the Babylonian Sun God and worshipped following the sinter solstice, on about December 22-23. Tammuz was thought to have died during the winter solstice, and was memorialized by burning a log in the fireplace. (The Chaldean word for “infant” is yule. This is the origin of the yule log.) His rebirth was celebrated by replacing the log with a trimmed tree the next morning.

The Roman god Saturn’s celebration fell on December 17 and lasted for seven days. Romans would gaily decorate their homes in evergreen boughs and candles, and would give gifts to one another. It was a time of visiting with family and friends, and of often-rowdy merry-making.

December 25 was also considered to be the birth date of the Iranian mystery god Mithra, the god of light and contracts. A once-minor god of the Persian pantheon, Roman soldiers adopted Mithra as the manly man’s hero, a divinity of fidelity, manliness, and bravery. Women were excluded from the caves where men worshipped Mithra through secret rituals.

Mithra came to be identified with the sun-god Helios and became known as ‘The Great God Helios-Mithras.’ Several Roman emperors formally announced their alliance with the sun, including Commodus who was initiated in public. Emperor Aurelian (AD 270 to 275) blended a number of pagan solstice celebrations of such god-men/saviors as Apollo, Attis, Baal, Dionysus, Helios, Hercules, Horus, Mithra, Osiris, Perseus, and Theseus into a single festival called the ‘Birthday of the Unconquered Sun,’ celebrated on December 25th.

There are a few rumored similarities between the legends of Mithra and the story of Christ. Mithra was said to have been born in a cave, with shepherds attending, (although there were no men on earth at the time (?)). Other legends have him being born from a rock by a river under a tree. According to Persian mythology, Mithra was a moral god, upholding the sanctity of the contract even when the contract was made with one who was sure to break it. Initiates into Mithraism would be ‘baptized’ with the trickle of the sacrificial bull’s blood that would flow into a pit. This blood was said to cleanse the initiates from any impurities.

The few actual similarities between the Persian Mithra and Jesus Christ are superficial and are nothing compared to the major differences between the two. The comparisons that are fairly close – that Mithra was born of a virgin, that he was buried and rose again, are based on Roman versions of Mithra that post date Jesus Christ and not the original Persian stories of the god. That a god who was (in the Persian tradition) born from a rock could also somehow be born of a virgin demonstrates the adaption of the story by the Romans after the time of Christ.

Tertullian (AD 160-220), the early Church writer, noticed that the pagan religion utilized baptism as well as bread and wine consecrated by priests. He considered Mithraism to have been inspired by the devil, who wanted to mock Christians and lead others to hell.

While Tammuz and Saturn, Mithra and the Unconquered Sun may have once been celebrated at the end of December, few people even are aware of them anymore. There are no shrines to Tammuz set up in town squares, nor are carols being sung around the neighborhood in honor of Mithra. Whatever celebrations that pagans once had (and still have) at the end of December, Christmas is a decidedly Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of our Savior.

As the Christmas season gets into full steam, let’s certainly avoid the temptation to worship pagan gods (wherever those temptations might yet lurk), but let’s do focus on rejoicing that God sent His Son to be a man like us. He was laid in a manger as a baby and later had no place to lay his head (Matt 8:20), yet he is the King of Kings (Rev 17:14) and God the Father has given him a name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow (Phil 2:8-11). Rather than fearing the pagan history of this time of year, let’s take advantage of the current cultural opportunity to worship and bring glory to Christ at a time when people are most open to his being the “reason for the season”.

Judgement & Mercy

  • Posted on December 13, 2011 at 11:24 pm

A couple weeks ago I finished reading in the book of Jeremiah in the Bible.  (KJV)  While reading this book I learned the following things:  God is just and he is merciful.  He warned the people of Judah many, many times before he punished them for their sins.  They were worshiping idols and sacrificing their children to false gods and would not repent of their sins/wickedness.  Even in judgement God thru Jeremiah told the people that if they would humble themselves to the King of Babylon before his army laid the first siege to the city of Jerusalem, they would live.  Some humbled themselves but many did not and it did not go well for them and they were slain or died of plague and starvation.

Jeremiah was even thrown in prison for speaking God’s truth/word to the King and the people of Judah.  They did not want to hear what God was telling them.  They would not repent and turn from their sinful ways and as a consequence God was forced to punish them.  He did not want to punish them but he had to.  God is just and holy and cannot let sin continue in people’s lives.  Sinners must repent and turn from their sins and seek God’s grace and mercy.  When they do this with  a humble, obedient, repentant heart God will forgive their sins.  If they would have repented and turned back to God they would not have been overtaken by the Babylonians and taken into captivity for 70 years.

While reading this I pondered how much this sounds like the world we live in today.  We sacrifice our precious little ones on the alter of convenience and end their lives with abortion.  We say it’s okay for two men or women to marry one another.  Our idols come from the entertainment and sports industry.  We do not defend the poor and the widow.  We have forgotten the many blessings that God has bestowed upon us and have forsaken his love.  Then we wonder why things are in such a mess?  Very sad…

Judgement is coming for us too.  Sooner than anyone can even imagine.   I hope you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior?  Time is short and the storm clouds are on the horizon even as I write this.  Are you noticing the signs?

To God Be the Glory, Kim

Santa Claus?

Yes Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus
from the December 06, 2011
eNews Issue – Koinonia House

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

In 1897, Francis P. Church wrote a now-famous editorial in which he told little Virginia O’Hanlon that indeed there was a Santa Claus. Church wrote in the Sun:

“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist… No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever.”

St. Nicholas:

About AD 260 there was born a certain man named Nicholas who became well known for his generosity and his love of children. Raised in the city of Patara on the coast of what is now Turkey, Nicholas traveled to Palestine as a young man. He later became bishop of the nearby town of Myra. When Emperor Diocletian focused on persecuting Christians, Nicholas was tortured and imprisoned for his faith in Christ. According to tradition, Nicholas was released by Emperor Constantine and later attended the First Council of Nicea in AD 325.

Stories of Nicholas’ generosity and kindness continued to spread long after his death. During the Middle Ages, Nicholas became patron saint of charitable fraternities and children, and legends sprouted about his feats of good will. After the Reformation, the legend of St. Nicholas died out everywhere except in Holland. When the Dutch Reformed Christians immigrated to the United States, they brought the traditions of “Sinterklaas” with them. St. Nicholas still rides into Dutch towns every November, dressed in his bishop’s garb.

Later in Germany, St. Nicholas would traditionally arrive on his Feast Day, December 6th. A man dressed as St. Nick would go door to door loaded with a giant sack. He gave presents to those children who had been good during the year, but a lump of coal was the lot of bad children.

The visual image and personality of St. Nicholas changed during the years. His red outfit was derived from the red colors bishops wore, but he was often portrayed as tall and thin. The modern version of St. Nick as a plump cheery man originated in a series of Thomas Nast engravings in Harper” Weekly during and after the American Civil War.

Living Forever:

This is a season during which we remember that God sent His Son to earth to be born as a little human baby. The Creator of the Universe was made subject to all the troubles and difficulties of this life and ultimately died for our sins. Because God gave us His Son, we all have access to eternal life with Him. There is no greater gift.

While Santa is often seen as a diversion that takes the focus off of Jesus (and rightly so) the real St. Nicholas was no distraction. He was a man who served Jesus with his whole life.

Mr. Church was correct in his letter to little Virginia, though perhaps not in the way he intended. The original St. Nicholas, the man who loved children and cared for the poor, that man was real. That Nicholas does live and live forever – for he was a follower of Jesus Christ.

The Nails

  • Posted on December 12, 2011 at 10:09 pm

Last week I had a strange dream.  I don’t remember all the details.  I just remember there was like a flood of water covering the land in a certain area, then when the waters receded there where these piles of six foot long nails in a couple places.  I remember this feeling of wonderment of what the nails were used for while dreaming.

Couldn’t really say what the dream really meant if it meant anything.  I’ve been pondering it though, because it sticks in my mind for some reason.

The water and nails remind me of things that happened to Jesus when he walked the earth.  The water reminds me of his baptism and the nails remind me of his death on the cross.  But the size of the nails could have only been used on a giant of a man.  Hmmmm….. is Jesus bigger than we think he is?  Is our concept of who Jesus really is too small?  Is he so much more than any of us can comprehend?  I believe he is.

When someone is baptized they usually are immersed in water to symbolize death and when they arise from the water it is symbolic of a new life in Christ.  (Death and Resurrection) So it is interesting that the nails were  under the water and revealed when it receded.

Maranatha, Kim

Spirit of Wisdom

  • Posted on December 12, 2011 at 9:17 pm

The other day I received an email from Blue Letter Bible for their Day by Day by Grace Devotional.  As I was reading through it I found something very interesting.  I noticed and it was most probably the prompting of the Holy Spirit opening my mind to a new concept that I had not considered before.  But I noticed that in the verse of Ephesians 1:17 it says “…the spirit of wisdom and revelation”.  I guess I’d never really looked upon wisdom and revelation as a spirit.  To God be the Glory, Kim

Give, the Language of Grace

I have written more boldly to you on some points…because of the grace given to me by God…I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus. (Romans 15:15 and 1 Corinthians 1:4)

The grace of God (which produces boldness in those who live by it) is a gift from God. “I have written more boldly to you on some points… because of the grace given to me by God.” In fact, “give” is basic to the language of grace.

When Paul began his first letter to the believers in Corinth, he emphasized this truth. “I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus.” This is the starting point for all of the work of God in human hearts. The initial work of salvation is by the gift of God’s grace. None of it is produced by the work of man. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). This same pattern of the giving of grace is true concerning every good thing that God wants to accomplish in man. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17).

What God wants to do in our hearts is accomplished by His grace, which must be given to us. This is true concerning eternal life. “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish” (John 10:28). This also pertains to the Holy Spirit in our lives. “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever” (John 14:16). It is true concerning spiritual gifts. “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all…But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift” (1 Corinthians 12:7 and Ephesians 4:7). This pattern applies to spiritual rest and peace as well. “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest…Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you” (John 11:28; 14:27). When it comes to the greatest matter of all (getting to know the Lord better), God must give to us what is required for such growth: “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him” (Ephesians 1:17). All of these precious benefits from God are a result of His giving of His grace into our lives.

Will the giving heart of God ever cease toward us? We need never fear that God will tire of giving us grace. “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32).

Lord God, giver of every gift of grace, I thank You for the rich and extensive grace that You have given to me. Help me to understand that all of Your kingdom is brought into my experience by the giving of Your grace, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Little Blessings

  • Posted on December 5, 2011 at 8:50 pm

On Sunday December 4th, 2011 my family and I attended the church of a dear brother and sister in Christ.  But the night before I was wondering if I would be able to go or not because my left hip was really bothering me and I didn’t think I could sit for 2 hours with it that way.  I got up and went to church anyway and during church and after it my hip didn’t bother me anymore.  Praise the Lord for his little blessings in my everyday life!
